Causes of the Cold War Essay -- History USSR USA
Causes of the Cold War In this paper I will discuss what actions and thoughts added up to cause the cold war. The cold war lasted from September 1, 1945 to about December 25, 1991. That is about forty-five years, which is an extremely long time. The cold war was a global competition basically between two sides, the Free World, which was led by the United States of America, and the Communist World led by the Soviet Union. The struggle took place through indirect military conflict, and direct competition in the areas of economics, diplomacy, culture, space exploration, and political theory. It also involved nuclear stand offs, espionage, and global competition for other nations. The cold war has established the framework for most international and national policy decisions. The United States? goals were to defend Western Europe, contain Soviet and Communist expansion, and to prevent nuclear war. The Americans had an estimated twenty-four million veterans participating in the cold war and spent over twelve trillion dollars on it as well. The results for America were that we maintained the achievements of our victory in World War II, avoided/prevented global nuclear war, and unified Germany. We also directly freed 400 million people in ten different European nations from the bondage of Communism. We did this in the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. The United States also indirectly assisted in the freeing or relieving of tension/control on the peoples of Albania, Yugoslavia, Finland, and Mongolia. Basically the two pick players in the cold war were the United States and the Soviet Union. At the end of the World War II the relations be... ...place mainly between the Soviet Union and the United States, again. The USSR got extremely annoyed not to know about America?s atom bomb in 1945. However the USSR got their own atom bomb in 1949 and then both sides began to stock up on weapons to arm themselves. The Soviets took the American bombing on Japan as an American motive to intimidate Josef Stalin of the Soviet Union. The existence of nuclear weapons prevented an all-out war, possibly a World War III, between the Soviet Union and The United States. Both sides realized that since they both have nuclear weapons what good would it be to use them, because they would destroy each other. So basically there was numerous things that took place that added up to the creation of the cold war. Nobody can pick out one event and say that it caused the cold war, because it was definitely more than one thing.

Benefit of changing to Activity Based costing system
Activity Based Costing has been of great help to the companies and other forms of businesses. With the help of ABC, the organizations have been able to implement strategies to overcome various problems facing the welfare of their businesses and other activities in the organizations. The organizations have been able to assign cost of each activity to the products and services that are offered by a particular organization. This is done for the sole purpose of elimination of high prices to some products and due to lack or low profits in other products or services. The ABC rule is used as a tool by businesses to assign the cost of the business activities to the goods and services (organization products) offered by the business to its customers. It is used as a tool that understands the customers and the product cost and the overall profitability. It is also used to in supporting the decision making process as would be used in product pricing, marketing, identification and a way to measure the initiative of improvements. IntroductionThe Activity-Based Costing (ABC) is a method used by accountants that can allow the business to collect data in regard to their operations costs. Their operations cost is then assigned to specific activities that include planning, production and other organization activities and then they are associated with the variety of products and services. This enables the company to know what products and services have increasing profits and which have increased losses, this help in learning the flow of each product and service within the company. The use of ABC method help the concerned personnel in the company to prepare an effective data that will aid in preparing budget that will bring a greater achievements in the company and enable the company to have an effective plan for the expense that will keep the company running smoothly for a given period of time. ABC method is mostly effective and is much recommended for a longer period of time over t he short term as opposed by the theory of constraints. Research objectives The objectives of this research are: â⬠¢ To determine the effectiveness of ABCâ⬠¢ To investigate how companies implement the ABC in their activities â⬠¢ To compare the excellence of companies that use ABC and those that donââ¬â¢t use ABC â⬠¢ To determine the advantages and disadvantages of ABC Literature review The activity based costing got first implementation in the 1980s. It was a formed as an alternative to replace the traditional way of cost management systems that was not effective in producing favorable results when allocating the costs. The implementation of the system was advocated by Professor Robert Kaplan of Harvard business school. It was initially used for private business though it has currently gained usage by even the public forums like those used to measure the efficiency of the governance. The ABC programs require proper planning and great commitment from the highest mana gement. It is recommendable to start up with trials in the organization. These trials may be done with the departments that are not performing well as it would be expected of them. This would be a great chance to show that the ABC is an effective system that would save money for the company with great achievements. On the other hand, if the company des not save money on this, either the system process was not well implemented or may not be effective for the company. (Gary, 1998) According to the study, the business should first set up a team that will master the progress of the product and which activity would be appropriate for the product and service. The team should include all persons from the different departments of the company. After the formation of the team and putting in place all the required materials, the activities that cost money are determined. (Cokins, 1999 and David 1991)At this point, great attention is paid for details on each activity are required, most of the co sts might be hidden and may bring in controversy there after for the may not be obvious initially. Even though there might be some replacement to human labor, itââ¬â¢s still important to determine the fixed cost of a product or service. (Cokins, 2000) Even though this method is important to the business, it has some risks. The companies that use the ABC system, the risk using too much time and money while trying to implement the system and collecting data, going through it and in implementations.Lack of detailed data can lead to frustrations of the managers and can on the other hand contribute to the down fall of the system. Mistake done on the data collection can lead to downfall again if not noticed before implementation. (Joyce, 1999) Through the implementation of the activity based costing, the employees are able to understand the different costs that are involved in different activities. This enables them to analyze and identify the activities that add value to the product a nd those that do not, it helps them improve on value and benefits are realized. In the DHL Company, the employees are involved in collecting data and views from the clients; this enables them to involve themselves in quality improvement of their services and eliminate the non profitable activities that enable the overall companyââ¬â¢s efficiency. (Henricks, 1999) The ABC system has helped the DHL Company to answer the market need in providing quality service at a better and competitive price. This system has helped the companyââ¬â¢s to management in the decision making process. (Hicks, 1998) This has helped the company to reduce the price of their services without a decline in value of their services.(Hicks, 1999) The benefits of the ABC system are now in use in most institutions that include the government departments and the public financial institutions. The Barclays bank New York changed its accounting method to provide accurate and cost effective data. Through the change t o ABC, the Barclays bank has particularly found it helpful compared to the former funding based accounting systems that was designed for ensuring legal compliance. (Paulo, 1998) In the use of ABC, the managers are able to direct funds where they are more beneficial. They are able to learn the weaker points in the organization making it easy for them to implement the most beneficial activity in the business. (Robert, 2004) The managers in Barclays bank found that ordinary accounts were not doing much well compared to loans, they campaigned for people to take more loans at simpler rates and prolonged repayments period, and this increased to Banks profits than ever. The bank is launching new loan strategies that are expected to double the profits. (Robert and Bruns, 1987)

Mythological Creatures Mermaids Essay - 1183 Words
Mythological creatures, such as Mermaids, are believed to not be true. If mermaids did exist, however, could they survive under the environmental conditions for which they live? Honestly, yes, under the absolute circumstances and correct biological makeup a half human/half fish creature could possibly revive in our natural world. Since a mermaidââ¬â¢s habitat is located in the ocean, they must adapt to its characteristics. The ocean is high in oxygen levels, but low in nutrient concentration. Also stratified, it has different zones known with distinctive components for each. For example, the upper photic zone accumulates plenty of light, but light intensity decreases rapidly with depth. To determine the temperature of the zones is based uponâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Partitioning in this cycle are three main blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries. These networks are scattered throughout the body and blood travels in only one direction. Lastly, the heart (located behin d the sternum or breastbone) is a hollow organ enclosed of smooth muscle that accommodates 4 chambers. Working in a rhythmic cycle, it pumps blood when contracting and accumulates with blood while relaxing. Therefore, allowing mermaids and humans to perform their roles in daily life. Continuously, mermaids are categorized as vertebrates because they do in fact have a backbone. Thus, all vertebrates have cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle. First, cardiac muscle is only found in the heart. Unlike skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle can trigger action potentials without input from the nervous system because of ion channels in their plasma membrane. Resulting in the rhythmic cycles discussed earlier. Second, smooth muscles, derived in hollow organs and blood vessels, are responsible for involuntary body activities; such as churning of the stomach. Third, skeletal muscle must be attached to a rigid structure in order to be operated. This category of muscle is only found in the top half of mermaids because of their fish-like bottom. Fish are over fifty percent muscle and are mostly segments of connective tissue that splits ââ¬Å"sheets of muscle up called myotomesâ⬠(Ramel). The Code Of Honor In The Iliad And The Odyssey - 1684 Words
In Websterââ¬â¢s Dictionary, a hero is defined as a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of purpose, especially if this individual has risked or sacrificed his life. In the Iliad and the Odyssey, the code which administers the conduct of the Homeric heroes is a straightforward idea. The aim of every hero is to achieve honor. Throughout the Iliad and the Odyssey, different characters take on the role of a hero. Honor is essential to the Homeric heroes, so much that life would be meaningless without it. Thus, honor is more important than life itself. Throughout the Iliad, heroic characters make decisions based on a specific set of principles, which are referred to as the ââ¬Å"code of honor.â⬠The heroic code that Homer presents to readers isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Throughout the entire Trojan war, Achilles spent most of his time pouting in his tent after Agamemnon kidnapped his prized maiden, Chryseis. When Achilles kills Hector, he binds his feet to his chariot and drags his body around the walls of Troy. In my opinion this was not an act of heroism. But in the Iliad the Greeks loved Achilles. Achilles was considered half mortal and half God. Achilles has all the characteristics of a heroic warrior on a grand scale, and he possesses more than a common measure of all the merits and all the faults of a hero (Bowra 193). All of Achilles traits and glory are won primarily in battle, which sets Achilles apart from Hector because Achilles knows little about home and family. Drug Education and Public Awareness Free Essays
Throughout history, America has been fighting against drug and alcohol abuse in teens and adults. Many ways companies and anti-drug groups try to prevent drug and alcohol abuse is through education in school systems and out of school systems. They teach young students about drugs and alcohol before they risk being around them, and they teach older students about drugs while they are around in their daily lives. We will write a custom essay sample on Drug Education and Public Awareness or any similar topic only for you Order Now Are these education programs really necessary? Thatâ⬠s the question many people ask, and also the question Iâ⬠m going to attempt to answer. The government is usually the group that attempts to educate people about the causes and effects of drugs and alcohol through programs such as D.A.R.E (drug abuse resistance education) or S.M.A.R.T. (Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time-Specified objectives). D.A.R.E. tries to educate kids about drugs and alcohol while S.M.A.R.T. conducts studies to see how effective these programs really are. There have been several studies done that failed to find any value in the DARE program. About 26 million American school children are taught to resist the lure of drugs and alcohol by the DARE program, a studied showed that most of the students who took the 17 week DARE program ended up using drugs and alcohol at the same rate as children who learned about them in a normal health class. Many people think that DARE is the magic bullet to solve the drug and alcohol problems in the nation. Another study conducted in Illinois on about 1800 students, showed that DARE students used th! e same amount of drugs who did not take the program, and another study concluded that DARE students were more likely to use drugs than students without the education. Many tax payers demand to see what impact their money is having on substance abuse. The SMART program conducts many tests to show how effective or ineffective the use of drug and alcohol prevention or education programs really are. SMART has come to a conclusion that there is a ââ¬Å"Null Hypothesisâ⬠, which means that X education programs has no significant effect in bringing substance abusers into long term abstinence. In 1995 SMART studied nearly 1000 people, from these they were able to find 99 who were discharged with the notation of ââ¬Å"treatment complete.â⬠Of these 99 they selected 50 people at random and were able to find only 18 of those 50 people, and of those 18 people, only 11 people said they had remained clean and sober since leaving the treatment and being educated about drugs. These studies are proof that the null hypothesis is true and most education programs do not have any effect on the people who are being educated about drugs and alcohol. Although the government is trying to help with the problem, they arenâ⬠t doing a very good job. It is a common observation that there is a hug lag time in the governmentâ⬠s response to a social problem such as drugs and alcohol. A problem will affect a society for quite some time and cause damage before the government will support any funds or a means to stop the problem. After they fund education programs to teach children about drugs and alcohol, they keep funding unnecessarily increasing taxes, which send money nowhere. The government needs to spend more money on realizing what they are doing wrong in educating students who only go off to use drugs anyway. There is a general theme of a Cultural Revolution of Drug Treatment programs seen in America. The revolution beings with the heroic phase where the problem begins and spreads rapidly and the use of drugs and alcohol increases. Next is the classical phase where the social problem reaches its peak and the use of drugs is the highest. During the Classical phase, education programs are being used to try to stop and prevent drug and alcohol use. Then there is an Imperial stage where the problem begins to decline and comes to an end after people have learned about drugs and alcohol. The final stage is the Decadent phase when the previous users who quit, being to use drugs and alcohol again the process continues. This shows that drug and alcohol education programs donâ⬠t really do much in the way of preventing drugs, except a short term of no drug use. There are also many education programs in older groups of people such as college students. Alcohol abuse prevention programming on college campuses presents special challenges. Although many people think of college students as young, they legally are adults. Since 1972, when the legal age of majority was lowered to 18, college students have all of the same rights and privileges as older adults, except they cannot drink legally until they reach the age of 21. Despite all the education that occurred when they were younger, they are now drinking under-age and buying alcohol underage. Many college students are killed due to alcohol poisoning. What did all that education about alcohol do? Absolutely nothing if they ended up drinking themselves to death. College administrators can no longer treat college undergraduates as children and have no authority to act the place of parents, since the parents of an 18 year old themselves have no legal authority over the student. The extent of a collegeââ¬â¢s control over its students is a matter of contract. Colleges can enforce conduct codes only through contract rights. At Indiana University-Bloomington, alcohol is prohibited in all on-campus undergraduate residences supervised by the University, and in all other areas open to the public. While that is the rule, enforcement is difficult. Using a strong enforcement hand is very difficult, and not well accepted by students and many parents. These students were educated about the rules of alcohol at their college and also about the causes and effects of alcohol to the body and brain, but they still do not listen and studies show that they still drink regardless of what prevention program they underwent when they were teens. As you can see, and as the results from all the studies done show drug and alcohol education programs have little and sometimes absolutely no effect on the use of drugs and alcohol among students any age. Teens in high school, or adults in college, they all abuse drugs and alcohol no matter what drug education program they went through. Many people are even killed through the use of drugs and alcohol. The government needs to realize that educating people about drugs only makes them aware that the drugs are out there and available to them. How to cite Drug Education and Public Awareness, Papers

Business Social Responsibility Comparative -Myassignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discus About The Business Social Responsibility Comparative? Answer: Introducation I have learned that globalization in the fashion industry implies abundance of fashion that is sold by the multinational organization or the giant retailers who makes transnational deals and co-ordinate for worldwide distribution of goods. The tendency of the people to get attracted towards fashion and different varieties within different geographic location has a homogenizing effect across different locations and this represents a global paradox. These globalization in the fashion industry is created with the help of computerization and internet in different global markets. According to me, I think globalization in the fashion industry has been both advantageous as well as disadvantageous. It has created pressure among the workers who are engaged in the factories with low wages. Bangladesh stands third in production of clothes after Turkey and China and this video clearly highlights the pressure among the factory workers in this industry. From the video, I have also analyzed that ma jority of the people prefer to shop through bargaining. Bargaining helps people to find the perfect piece of clothing at the given price. I have found that globalization in the textile industry means people are trying to pay the real cost for the clothing and thus get their desired or preferred choice at the correct time. I have found that the more than 4 million people to Bangladesh in the textile industry and most of the companies have opened up their factories in Bangladesh due to the low cost of labor The factory owners have to keep their prices down due to the steep competition among the companies and this is improving the business environment of Bangladesh. The raw materials are purchased from other countries and the products are made at a much cheaper price compared to other countries. Therefore, I can say that Bangladesh is improving in textile industry and globalization is paving its path for development (Pumpkin Interactive 2018). Starbucks Social Responsibility Video After analyzing the video, I have found that Starbucks started in 1971 with three partners. Among these three partners, one partner was the supplier to the company and after a trip to Italy, they decided to open a coffee shop. After analyzing the coffee market in Italy, These three partners decided to open a coffee shop of roasted coffee. Starbucks has captured the market because of its flavor and not because it was dark. I have also found that coffee loses weight and moisture when it is processed or roasted and thus it is considered as a loss for the company. This transformation generally begins when green coffee beans are heated in huge drums and they turn yellow after adequate heating process. Moreover, Starbucks is also trying to bring more flavors and thus bring unique and different flavors for people from different places. At Starbucks, they are trying to blend coffee that will showcase the particular region in the country. For example, In Latin America, the three coffee flavors has been brewed into one single flavor that exemplifies the best quality of that region. The company is also trying to blend the beans from different regions to weave the different tastes and aromas of coffee. On the other hand, I think blends like Gold Coast Blend, Caffe Verona and Starbucks Christmas Blend offers complex flavors that are not easily available in other single origin coffee. Starbucks is also carrying out several programs in educating students as well as training teachers in the rural countries. The coffee industry is also facing challenges due to overproduction. The coffee that is brought by the common people does not affect Starbucks by the dynamics of demand and supply affects the company. I have also found that it is also difficult for the company to stay connected with the farmers on everyday basis and thus enhance the production of coffee (Prof TabOkWU 2018). Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz on Social Responsibility I have found that from the inception of Starbucks, social responsibility is manifested in everything around itself and several campaigns are carried out for stock options and health care options for the employees. It was very challenging and difficult for the company to grow successfully. The only way that was available to the company is the creation of value through the shareholders and thus this will also help in value creation for the company. I have found that Schultz has stressed that the companies must focus on the community group that can help them to improve from the bottom line. This is considered important because there are many communities in America and it is important to take care of these companies. Moreover, 42 out of 50 states are experiencing budget deficit and there is cut to social services. The business leaders and the companies must realize these problem and they must not keep on waiting for the other companies. The different displays of social and political conc ern are becoming common at Starbucks and it is the responsibility of the company to take care of this and thus help in community and social development. The scale and size of the company and the different platforms will allow the management directors of different companies to arise their voice and thus it will help in carrying out the project successfully. I have also analyzed and found that there are many companies that talk extensively of the different issues and thus this company also focus on global environment and different environmental issues. Schultz also acknowledged that he has taken care of several issues that affects the staffs and the other community members of Starbucks and it is also trying to educate the people through this programs (genConnect U 2018). Cotton On Foundation: We Empower, We End Poverty I have found that the mission of the company is to empower the youth and show them the right way to lead in a correct way. I can say that through education and different opportunities, Cotton On Foundation and the different supporters of Uganda are trying to break the poverty cycle. I have also found that it is important to pay attention on sustainable future and this will help the people of Uganda to generate an income that will help in the continuous growth and development. It is important that this developmental process take place village by village and child by child and this will improve the lives of the people. This is regarded as the main commitment of the people and the vision of Uganda by 2020. I have found that Mannya is providing healthy and nutritious meals to the school children and thus according to the survey, it has been found that it is serving more than 800 meals of the students who did not get proper meal or had to stay hungry. I can also say that planning for a su stainable and proper future is essential and several schools must be built in Uganda that will help the country to develop and thus progress on this path. Several initiatives must also be taken and it is important to collaborate or to be in partnership with the local communities as well as teachers that will help in improving the life of the people. Therefore, it can be said that the mission of the group is to develop the educational places, provide healthy and safe drinking water and food to the people and work together for reduction of poverty and improve the quality of life of the people (Cotton on Foundation 2018). Issues In Financial and Accounting Fraud I have found that most accounting scandals occur due to forgery in financial reporting. Fraudulent in financial reporting is considered as the misstatement of different financial statements by the companys management. This is carried out with the intent of misleading investors and it also helps in maintaining the share of the company. The effects of misleading financial reporting will boost the stock prices of the company in the short run and this ill effects will always hamper the company. The short term focus of a companys accounts and finances is referred to as myopic management. I can say that the most common issue is the misappropriation of assets and this happens because the other company uses the assets of one company. This may also lead to stealing and misappropriation of assets can occur at any level of the company. I can also cite different examples in relation to this case. For example,a senior level executive in most cases may charge a family dinner to the company as the business expenses that is to be provided by the company. On the other hand, at the same level of production, the employees may take home supplies to his/her home for personal use. Thus, this also results of misappropriation of assets. I can also say that penalties are also charged for the violation of accounting ethics and law. In certain cases, the legislation will allow harsh penalties for manipulating and destroying the different information and also interfering in the different investigation process. I think it is important to be aware of this trend and this has constructed the different accounting processes and it has also helped in the elimination of boundaries between the different accounting processes. Therefore, it is important to assume that different accounting profession that is responsible for sharing their own way of calculation and thus prevent forgery and miscalculation in the different accounting processes (Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University 2018).
